Beginnings
Many kinds of murals exist in vastly different settings around the world. Some are astonishingly complex and some are small, simple and intimate. The context of the mural's location usually influences the subject matter, scale, color and design.
Keeping it simple - what I mean by that is, if you have a formal, traditional home, you want the mural to be more traditional, as well. If you are putting a mural in a garden room, chances are you will want a garden-appropriate theme/design in that setting. If your son or daughter wants a mural in their bedroom, you would prefer a mural that matched your child's taste and interests.
For example: Here in Arizona we have Southwestern murals on the sides of our freeways, both carved and painted. We see them in restaurants, stores, museums, zoos, churches - an endless, delightful variety. They FIT here.
What kind of mural is right for me?
That depends on your likes and dislikes, the style of your home, your personal style, your tastes, your sense of whimsy, for whom it is being painted, your in-laws (just kidding!).
Some murals appeal more to children, employing brighter colors and large, simple, easy to understand forms. Some murals are painted to create a special, personal illusion. The wall above is part of a mural that was designed to bring the outdoor gardens in - to create the illusion that the garden doesn't end at the patio door.
